NACA Attends the 2010 U.S. Census Summit Conference for Asian Community Leaders

Olivia Wu represented NACA by attending the 2010 Census Summit Conference for the Asian Community. This event was hosted by the U.S. Census Bureau Atlanta Region from August 18-19. The objective of this summit conference was to ask Asian Community leaders and organizations to help the Census Bureau achieve an accurate count of the Asian population in the 2010 Census for the states of Georgia, Alabama, and Florida, all of which are members to the Census Atlanta Regional Office.

The conference invited 50 leaders or representatives of various community organizations from various sectors including education, healthcare, business, and religious. The community leaders openly discussed concerns and shared suggestions with each other and with the Census Bureau Atlanta Region officers and 30 partnership specialists. These specialists were hired by the Census from Asian community to help with the 2010 Census projects.

During the meeting, NACA was recognized by the Census as one of four organizations that have been partners of the Census and who assisted in the U.S. 2000 Census. NACA will be one of the community partners teaming up with the Census to address past under-counted and under-funded situations for the Asian community in Georgia. This serves to benefit the community in the coming years.

Quick Facts about the 2010 Census:

$300 million federal funds will be allocated to the community each year for the coming 10 years; the allocation will base on the 2010 Census population of each state and different ethnical groups.
Those residing in Georgia by April 1, 2010 should be counted by filling out a questionnaire and returning it to the Census.

U.S. Citizens, foreign residents, short-term visitors, and international students all need to be counted.
The 2010 Census Questionnaire will only have 10 simple questions instead of the two-page detailed questionnaire that was previously used.

Questionnaires will be delivered to households starting March 2010; kiosks will be set up around the city to answer questions and provide blank questionnaires.
