Celebrating its 105th Anniversary, Chinese Yueju Opera Showcases in Atlanta

NACA, among other local Chinese organizations such as the Zhejiang Association of Atlanta, supported a Yueju Opera show that took place here in Atlanta on September 17th. Ranked second after Peking Opera, Yueju Opera is the second most popular form of Chinese opera. Originating in Zhejiang Province, Yueju Opera is widespread and popular across China as it celebrates its 105th Anniversary this year. The first Yueju performance was held in Shengzhou, a city in Zhejiang Province, in 1906.

The performance in Atlanta boasted a group of popular actresses [ 李敏 (祝英台), 陈雪萍 (梁山伯) ] who have achieved the highest skill in this form, while receiving numerous awards including the Chinese Drama Plum Blossom Award.

Other than Atlanta, the group is touring only two other cities, Paris and New York. Supported by the Chinese government, Embassy and Consulate, the performance was a non-commercial promotion and cultural exchange activity.
