NACA Celebrates the Unveiling of the 2011 Lunar New Year Stamp

An event to issue and celebrate the United States Postal Service’s 2011 Lunar New Year stamp took place on Saturday, January 22nd. This event, commemorating the Year of the Rabbit, took place at the National Archives at Atlanta and featured a reading by Kam Mak, the artist of this year’s Lunar New Year stamp, a Zoo Atlanta raffle to see the new baby panda, and a fair featuring various arts and crafts activities. Prior to the fair, the US Postal Service held the official dedication ceremony celebrating the unveiling of the 2011 Lunar New Year Stamp featuring two ripe kumquats, a depiction of a paper cutout of a rabbit and the Chinese character for “rabbit.” For the Chinese, kumquats help bring in the New Year symbolizing good luck and prosperity and are often given as gifts. This first class stamp is also a FOREVER stamp, meaning that regardless of how prices may change in the future for a first class stamp, these FOREVER stamps will always be the equivalent to the current first-class mail 1-ounce price. Sponsors of this event included OCA National, GSU Confucius Institute, GSU Asian Studies Center, Kollaboration Atlanta, TNTOM Design and Zoo Atlanta.
