NACA Celebrates the 2013 Chinese Lunar New Year

NACA began Chinese Lunar New Year festivities by celebrating with friends and special guests at its annual fundraising banquet held at Canton House Restaurant on the evening of Saturday, February 2nd. The Honorable Alvin T. Wong (DeKalb County State Court Judge) returned this year as Master of Ceremonies, captivating guests with his wit and humor. Festivities began with the traditional lion dance performed by Atlanta’s own Shaolin Institute and a warm welcome by NACA Acting President, Hong Wills. The Guest of Honor this evening was The Honorable Consul General Xu Erwen of the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Houston, who delivered the Keynote Address. Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, a constant figure among guests at the banquet and avid supporter of NACA, gave humble greetings during the dinner in addition to DeKalb CEO’s Burrell Ellis and Georgia Secretary of State, Brian P. Kemp. The banquet brought together old and new corporate and community sponsors and with guests exceeding over 300, NACA Board Member Rengen Li, proudly announced to guests the inauguration of NACA’s mentoring program to be officially launched later this month at UPS headquarters. In extending its mission statement and making a difference in the community, NACA announced its continued support to three local community groups.  Lani Wong, Chair of NACA, presented $6,000 to Georgia Perimeter College’s School of Nursing, $3,000 to Good Shepherd Services of Atlanta and $1,000 to Emory’s China Care Program.

The banquet’s end consisted of guests enjoying a 10-course meal, an entertainment arrangement of traditional Chinese song and dance and raffle drawings of over 30 items including restaurant and retail store gift certificates, artwork, authentic Chinese memorabilia and a bed and breakfast package at a luxury hotel.  To end the evening, Hong Kong Association of Atlanta’s Senior Consultant, Gene Hanratty conducted a rousing auction of items including but not limited to airline tickets and sporting event tickets.
