Georgia Tech Student Awarded National Association of Chinese Americans Scholarship At Georgia Woman of the Year Banquet

Presented by the Georgia Commission on Women and Georgia Woman of the Year Committee, Inc., this year’s Georgia Woman of the Year award was presented to civil rights leader and corporate executive, Xernona Clayton. Boasting a lifetime of achievement, Ms. Clayton worked in the front lines of the civil rights movement, alongside Dr. Martin Luther King, organizing events through the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). Her career in television began in 1967 at Turner Broadcasting Company where she rose through the ranks as a corporate executive and became the highest ranking female employee. Ms. Clayton eventually came to have her own television show in the South, becoming the first African-American person to do so. She is the Founder, President and CEO of the Trumpet Awards Foundation, Inc. and is the Executive Producer of the Foundation’s Trumpet Awards event, highlighting the achievements and contributions made by African-Americans. Ms. Clayton has dedicated her life traveling to promote human relations to diverse groups with the goal in improving racial understanding.

To honor Ms. Clayton, a reception and dinner was held on July 19th at 103 West in Buckhead with guest speakers and a presentation of the 2011 Georgia Woman of the Year Scholarships. Georgia Tech student, Tianlin “Linda” Chang, received the National Association of Chinese Americans Scholarship. Involved in numerous different organizations, Tianlin is the Publicity Chair of the Chinese Student Association, is a student advisor for the Student Government Association’s Sustainability Committee and is a member of Asian Scientists & Engineers. She is also the co-founder of the Water Alliance and is currently interning with Veiola Water North America. Tianlin was accepted to a prestigious five-year joint B.S.-M.S. program for Environmental Engineering and plans to graduate in 2012.
