Trade Policies – Bilateral Perspectives
- - U.S. Global trading policy; RMB rate issue; Protectionism and collaboration.
- - RMB Internationalization: When will “Made in China” become “Paid in Renminbi (RMB)”? China has recently de-pegged the RMB and allowed its gradual appreciation. After the global financial crisis in late 2008, Chinese government has realized its substantial exposure and concentration in USD assets. Chinese government is not advocating RMB as the alternative to the dollar. Government has taken baby steps in commercializing and internationalizing the Chinese currency. Chinese government has started invoicing and settlement of its trade in RMB. The Pilot program actually started in July of 2009 when China started RMB Cross Border Trade Settlement with its neighboring Asian counterparts. Recently China’s Central Bank has announced the expansion of RMB settlement to include all foreign countries trading with China. The gradual appreciation of RMB will be an additional boost to RMB as a store of value. Convertibility of the Chinese currency on both trade and capital accounts is a major hurdle to having RMB as an internationally accepted currency as well as to becoming one of major reserve currencies.
What is the trend and how long will it take for the RMB to be an international reserve currency? What does this mean to your business ?
