10/09/2009 2010 U.S. Census Chinese Complete Count Committee of Georgia Formed
On October 9, 2009, the 2010 U.S. Census Chinese Complete Count Committee (CCCC) of Georgia was formed and had its first meeting in the Georgia Power building in downtown Atlanta.
The CCCC is formed under the umbrella of the Asian Complete Count Committee of Georgia (ACCC) as one of 15 ethnic-Asian subcommittees to ensure the highest Chinese count and Asian count in Georgia’s history for Census 2010. As one of the fastest growing Chinese population states in the nation, Georgia’s Chinese and Asian populations were undercounted in the 2000 Census. This resulted in a disadvantage to these groups, as there was a lack in federal funding allocation, dedicated to the areas of education, healthcare and transportation.
The CCCC is chaired by Dr. Josephine Tan and coordinated by the Census Chinese Community Specialist Sophia Wang and Henry Yee. The Chair of the ACCC, Helen Kim, talked about the mission of their initiative. The meeting had a host of of community organizations, business groups, faith-based groups, student organizations, and individuals that represent the Chinese and Asian communities in Georgia.
Each subcommittee brainstormed and made presentations that encouraged participating organizations to post pertinent materials, videos, presentations and activities related to the Census that their group created. They encouraged contributing to the community calendar, sharing resources, guidance and ideas with the rest of the ACCC community. They also sought to recruit other organizations, groups, faith-based groups and individuals in the community to join the force.
As one of the partners of Census Bureau in 2000 Census, NACA chairs the community organization subcommittee of the CCCC. Olivia Wu, who represented NACA, attended the meeting and made a presentation to the committee.
